A Ceremony That Felt Like Them

Joya and Le'Mar were married aboard the Icon Yacht by City Cruises, surrounded by about 80 family members and friends as we cruised through Newport Beach Harbor.

Their ceremony had all the meaningful traditions they wanted: prayer, scripture, traditional vows, and a special song performed by Joya's godfather. However, this wedding was anything but stiff. Their guests laughed, cheered, and became part of the celebration.

When it came time to tell Joya and Le'Mar's story, I got to reveal the answers to the special “homework assignment” I give my couples. They had answered the questions separately, so Joya and Le'Mar got to hear the answers for the first time right along with everyone else.

Funny enough, their story actually began years before they became a couple. Joya and Le'Mar attended the same high school and even graduated in the same class, but they weren't high school sweethearts. They didn't really connect until years later, when a chance encounter brought them back into each other's lives.

By the end of the ceremony, they were married, we were cruising through Newport Beach Harbor, their guests were ready to celebrate, and Joya and Le'Mar went directly into their first dance as husband and wife.

Why a Newport Beach Boat Wedding Works

This wedding was especially fun for me because my wife and I were married on a boat in Newport Harbor back in 2006. So I might be a little biased, but I think it's a great way to get married.

One of the best things about a boat wedding is that everything happens in one place. Your ceremony, your reception, your guests, and some pretty incredible views are all right there. Once everyone is aboard, you're together for the experience.

And you really can't beat the setting. You're outside, surrounded by the water, cruising through Newport Harbor with the Southern California coastline around you. Immediately after I pronounced Joya and Le'Mar husband and wife, the ceremony transitioned into their first dance.

There are beautiful wedding venues all over the country, but there are some things you can only do in Southern California. Getting married while cruising through Newport Harbor is one of them.

You definitely can't do this in Kansas.
